Traffic accidents they are the main cause of infant mortality. 46 percent of the minors who died in traffic accidents do not use any child restraint system. Therefore, before starting a trip, preventive measures should be taken, such as correctly enabling the space for the little ones.
The Spanish Association of Pediatrics points to death on the road as the leading cause of mortality in 4-year-olds, the second in children under 2 years of age and the fourth in 1-year-old babies. The evolution of child road safety during the last twenty years (1990-2009) in Spain is encouraging, since for the first time the number of children (0-14 years old) who died as a result of traffic accidents has decreased, by concrete, 80% less.
One of the factors that has triggered this decline is the use of safety seats in the car. Even so, there is still an alarming number of children who do not use the necessary safety systems for their protection in the car.
Many pediatricians warn that two out of three children travel in vehicles without complying with the required safety standards. It is clear that carrying children in safety seats in vehicles is crucial to saving lives. The numbers prove that. In Spain, at least 1.6 children die or are injured a day. Using child safety devices in vehicles could prevent three out of four deaths and nine out of ten injuries.
Children are the most vulnerable passengers in the car. Therefore, it is essential to use seats and safety chairs adapted to their weight and size. Properly restrained children in a car reduces the risk of injury from minor shocks or more serious accidents. Experts ask that children ride in special chairs until they are 12 years old.
The Spanish Association of Pediatrics states that 40% of children travel without the necessary safety measures in the car, when these could prevent 75% of deaths and 90% of injuries in collisions. It is essential that children are attached to the car seat with a system adapted to their weight and height.
The back seat is the safest place for a child. However, another of the big mistakes when transporting a baby in the car is carrying him in your arms. Minor children should never be carried in your arms in the front seat. A child without adequate restraint, multiplies by five the chances of suffering fatal injuries.
According to data from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), children must sit in their place and with the appropriate chair. They must be accommodated in the car in a certain way according to their weight.
- Babies up to 10 kilos(about 9 months) They must go in carrycots, with safety harnesses, placed in the opposite direction to the march and in the back seat, if possible in the center. This reduces the risk of neck injuries in frontal impacts and increases protection in lateral impacts.
- Children between 9 to 18 kilos (from nine months to 3 years) They should go in chairs placed in opposite direction to the march and in the back seat (better in the center).
- Children between 15 and 25 kilos (from three to six years) They should go on booster cushions with a backrest or in seats compatible with the car seat belt.
- Children from 22 to 36 kilos (6 to 12 years old) They should go on height-adjustable booster cushions to achieve a good fit of the belt on the clavicle.
